For the record you don't need anything to compost. However, There are several things that can make it easier and encourage you to do it more often. We recommend at very least a small kitchen compost bin with an activated charcoal filter to keep any odors down. For more information on how to compost most effectively see Composting
Indoor Composting devices:
These are convenient, but highly unnecessary if you have a yard. They compost very quickly by adding artificial heat and chopping the materials. The compost produced can be added to house plants and you will see impressive growth and improved plant health, or just give it away or throw it on your lawn instead of buying inputs. The reduction of volume and volume to landfill is impressive.
Counter Top Compost Bins:
You want a bin with a charcoal filter for odors. Although if you take it out every few days and it is in a climate controlled room we have never found this to be a problem.
Choose your Style: Country, Modern. These can be decorative and something you want to display.
Choose your material. Stainless steel stands the test of time well, Made from recycled materials makes a statement and adds to the effectiveness of the solution. You want something that lasts, of course, but you also want something that you will want to display.
Compost Bins:
You don't need a compost bin to compost. In a smaller yard though this will hide the pile, and keep odor and pest possibility down.
Try without the bin first or try our cheap chicken wire solution below, however, if you go with a bin you want black plastic it absorbs heat from the sun and helps maintain the needed heat that naturally occurs via microbial action to accelerate composting.
You want ventilation as this promotes aerobic microbes which accelerates composting, and does not smell like anaerobic composting.
You will also want a compost turner if you use a bin. Much easier on your arms and acts somewhat like a Lomi blender blade to speed up composting process.
Compost Turners: Flipping compost with a pitchfork speeds up the process, however, pretty labor intensive and requires 2 open in front bins to flip from one to the other. A compost turner may be a good happy medium. You can aerate you bind with a pitchfork but it is harder on you arms.
